    Critical Thinking Skills for Today's Leaders

    In this competitive, global economy business leaders expect you to go beyond the technical aspects of your job and think like a businessperson. In fact, strategic business understanding was one of eight key differentiators of top performers according to the WorldatWork 2012 Total Rewards Professionals' Career Census.

    To gain this understanding, you must embody business acumen skills–knowing what's going on around you and how the business works internally and externally. Having a keen sense of business knowledge is essential for better decision making and driving long-term positive results for your organization.

    This course covers the essential skills, behaviors and actions that support the understanding and development of business acumen–helping you learn to see "the big picture," understand finance concepts, recognize the important relationship between compensation plans and the bottom line, and make wiser decisions.

    • 1. PTO/Leave/Time-Off Trends: What is your organization doing to stay competitive in the area of PTO? What market trends have you seen in Paid Family Leave and PTO? From expanded maternity benefits, longer periods of PTO, and the ability to donate time-off; this roundtable is focused on discussing how to stay competitive within the topic of PTO. 
    • 2. Pharmacy:  Trends, Cost Drivers, Specialty Rx, Clinical programs, RFP analysis, Integration! What is your company doing to manage the ever increasing Rx spend?  Let’s discuss innovative ideas and learn what strategies other employers are deploying to manage their employer’s pharmaceutical program spend.
    • 3. Volunteerism and Engagement: Less than ten years ago, volunteering or community service time off was rare, with roughly 15% of employers offering it in 2009 and only about 1% planning to offer it soon. Over the past decade, however, companies have started to take social responsibility seriously, seeking to counteract all manners of negativity. Today, organizations are providing days off for community service, matching charitable contributions, and allowing employees to donate time-off. Has your organization joined in this trend? If so, how?
    • 4. Financial Wellness: What programs are your company offering employees to handle current financial issues, such as to handle student loan assistance, and to plan for the future?
    • 5. Attracting Talent: The need to reskill individuals, restructure work, and improve the employee experience requires a broader approach to Rewards. The shift from Rewards to Relationships is a critical differentiator in attracting and retaining high-performing talent. We will discuss creative ways to attract talent in a tight labor market.
    • 6. Total Rewards Communication:  Total Rewards professionals work year-round researching, analyzing, modeling, and budgeting to design compensation and benefits programs that maximize the strategic contributions to their organizations. Ensuring that managers and employees appreciate and understand the rationale behind total reward designs and decisions can be challenging. Join us to share, discuss, and explore what is, or can be, offered in the blend of training, communication tools, data, and processes to powerfully communicate the full spectrum of rewards benefits provided to employees.
    • 7. Paying for Performance – Performance Reviews and Annual Increases: U.S. employers continue holding the line on merit salary-increase budgets despite pressures to remain competitive in a tight labor market, address pay equity and alleviate employee frustrations with pay. Typically, the annual merit-increase process is meant to tackle pay equity, market competitiveness and pay for performance. But slicing a small budget across these objectives means companies fall short on all. Let’s discuss why it's time to stop following the pack when it comes to salary-increase budgets. Join us in a dialogue on actionable strategies and best practices for fixing the merit-increase process and rethinking pay for performance to differentiate your organization.
    • 8. Social Determinants of Health:  Social determinants of health include factors like socioeconomic status, education, neighborhood and physical environment, employment, and social support networks, as well as access to health care.  There are a growing number of initiatives to address social determinants of health within and outside of the health care system. How are local employers and health care providers integrating these factors into their benefit or program offerings and what are other emerging trends in this evolving area of health care?
    How it works: 

    Table size will be limited to 8-10 people. Facilitators will introduce the topic and steer the discussion. Participants are asked to contribute their topical issues and share their ideas about other issues. Come prepared to learn something new about your hot topics AND to share your ideas/best practices.
